1. Inhale slowly for 10 seconds

First, take a deep breath in over 10 seconds until your lungs are completely full.

If you inhale too quickly, you won’t be able to last the full 10 seconds—so start slowly and adjust your pace to inhale and fill your lungs for exactly 10 seconds.

2. Hold your breath for 15 seconds

2. Hold your breath for 15 seconds

After inhaling for 10 seconds, hold your breath for 15 seconds.

Why Hiccups Happen—and How They Stop?

Why Hiccups Happen—and How They Stop?

In most cases, this breathing technique can stop hiccups—but why does it work?

In the following sections, I’ll explain what causes hiccups and why this method helps stop them.

What causes hiccups?

What causes hiccups?

Hiccups occur when the diaphragm spasms suddenly, producing the characteristic “hic” sound (Mayo Clinic, 2023). These spasms are involuntary, meaning they cannot be intentionally started or stopped.

Common reasons for hiccups:

Since hiccups are caused by spasms of the diaphragm, stopping those spasms can help stop the hiccups. (This applies to common, temporary hiccups—not those caused by underlying medical conditions.)

The breathing technique explained in this post is effective in stopping them. By inhaling, holding your breath, and then exhaling, the level of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in your blood increases, which helps stimulate the nerves (HiccAway, 2024).

This process relaxes the diaphragm, allowing the hiccups to stop.

Interestingly, according to Guinness World Records, an American man named Charles Osborne had hiccups for an incredible 68 years, from 1922 to 1990.

Quick Summary

Quick Summary

In this post, I introduced a breathing technique that can stop hiccups in just 40 seconds.

For common, temporary hiccups, this method is highly effective. However, if your hiccups are caused by an underlying condition, medical attention may be necessary. It is important not to underestimate persistent hiccups (longer than 48 hours), as they are not normal transient hiccups (episodes lasting seconds or minutes). As Thurrott (2025) notes,

“If your hiccups last longer than 48 hours, it could be a sign of something more serious,” said Wahid Wassef, MD, a gastroenterologist at Banner–University Medicine.

Check out the case report of persistent hiccups here (Quiroga, J. B., García, J. U., & Guedes, J. B. (2016). Hiccups: a common problem with some unusual causes and cures. National Library of Medicine)

If your hiccups last longer than usual or occur frequently, be sure to consult a medical professional.

Here’s a quick summary of the breathing technique introduced in this post:
